Have you considered Cloth?

Cloth what you ask?  Why cloth pads of course!20130902_155021
In a day and age when “green” is a buzz word and when it seems the entire planet is making you feel guilty for throwing anything away, cloth pads would be a good choice. But what if I told you there are actual health benefits for using cloth pads, benefits that would ease discomfort during your monthly cycle?
I know, I know, it’s seems yucky, downright disgusting.  But I’m here to convince you otherwise.  Tirzah and I have been using cloth pads for YEARS!  Myself longer than Tirzah, but years nonetheless.
Pros:
  • Reusable
  • Soft
  • Inexpensive
  • Cloth reduces the blood flow (chemical laced pads and tampons actually leech MORE blood out of your uterus.)
  • Less cramping.  (see above comment)
  • Cleaner
  • Not Itchy
  • Shorter periods
I think of a lot of the cons related to using cloth have more to do with our mindset than anything.  Going cloth was an easy switch for me, a mom, already using cloth diapers, touching plenty of yucky reusable things everyday.  For Tirzah, she used disposables until I got my act together to teach her how to make her own, now she would NEVER switch back.

Here’s what some of our pads look like.  Tirzah and I have our own that we keep separated; stored separately that is, not washed separately.  We just used some old flannel, an old towel and a special water proof fabric called PUL.
052
We made them with “wings” and Velcro closures.
002
We store our pads in cute little baskets in the bathroom.  This one is mine.
003
This is Tirzah’s.
005
We store the baskets on a shelf in the bathroom, super cute and discreet.
It’s not hard to wash cloth pads at all!  When we are going through our cycle we just stick our dirty pads in an old diaper pail with a washable liner. I’m not using this for diapers anymore, but when I was, we just added the pads to the dirty diapers.  You could keep an ice cream pail next to the toilet or even a cute little garbage can that’s just out during your special time of the month.  We wash our pads in our front loader using the sanitary cycle with a scoop of oxy clean with the detergent.  They come out stain free and odor free every time!  One time we forgot to wash the pads…for a whole month!  They still came out nice and clean.  Even if they were a little stained, so what?  Who’s going to see them anyway?  Smile

Here are some links for free patterns and more health information for you to check out.
Oh!  One more thing…cloth pads are portable too!  Tirzah has this cute little wet dry bag that she keeps in her purse when she needs it.  One more great thing about cloth pads is that they are virtually silent, if that crunching and tearing of regular pads makes you uncomfortable (like it does us) in the silent public bathroom!

So…what do you think?  Don’t be shy to ask questions or leave comments!

Review: PeekABootSocks

Recently I had the privilege of reviewing two pairs of boot socks from PeekABootSocks! Here are some of my favorite items from the shop:

  *Shop*   *Facebook

I actually have a pair of these, LOVE them!

Amber from PeekABootSocks surprised me with two lovely pairs- the red velvet knee high boots socks, and a pair of white boot cuffs.
(Not currently available)

I love them both! They came looking just like they did in the shop photos. The shipping was timely and they arrived in cute cardboard casings and ribbons.

Notes on the Boot Cuffs
I wasn't very smart the first time I wore my boot cuffs. I didn't wear jeans or leggings with my skirt so they fell right down my calf. :) However, the boot cuffs did go very nicely with my short black boots. With jeans they stayed up and looked very cute. The only problem I had was that when I walk, my boot zipper snags on the sock and frays it dreadfully, like in the picture below. I don't think this is a fault of the sock though, just me and my boot. :) I shall just have to adjust how I walk now.

I love the sock. It's so nice to wear with my short boots because my longer boot socks don't fit with those. :) These are perfect!

Notes on the Knee High Boot Socks
These socks are so comfortable! I was happy that they fit my feet, taking into consideration that the description says they fit a size ten and I wear an 11(in some brands). These socks are soft and adorable! I can't wait to wear them with my next red outfit.

Product Stars(out of five):

I would definitely recommend these products to a friend. Boot socks are the perfect accessory to a autumn or winter outfit, and PeekABootSocks makes some of the cutest!
Thank you so much PeekABootSocks for letting me review your item!

Scripture Column on Faith (September)

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
Hebrews 11:1

Look at the beauty that surrounds you. Look at the beauty in the picture above. One day while driving home, this was our view the whole way...It was breathtaking. And when I see such beauty, it makes me happy, I snap pictures, and I think how amazing our God is. God created such a beautiful world, and it shows His greatness! He created it for us to enjoy. How can someone not have faith in a God that created all of this?!

I love verses about faith. I think reading them both help me to have faith and gives me even more faith. Sometimes when our life is going normal or just like we want it to, we have plenty of faith...faith in lots of things. But then as soon as things turn bad, we lose that faith. The Bible tells us we are to walk by faith, not by sight. Not just sometimes, but always. Faith in the things unseen only makes our faith that much stronger! Faith, faith, faith.

Faith is not believing that God can, it is knowing that He will. Don't just think God is doing what's best for you, but know He is. Don't just think God has a plan for your life,  but know He does. Faith doesn't get you anywhere if you are constantly doubting.

It takes but a little bit of faith. Faith can move mountains. So go live your life, and have faith in the things unseen, and...

Have faith in God; God has faith you.

Lots of love

Home Made Pesto! Healthy, easy and yummy!

Hello everyone! I'm Anna and I was happy when Tirzah asked me to do a post on this neat blog. :)
I wasn't sure what to do for this post at first, but a day or so after she emailed me, I noticed that our basil plant was getting rather weighed down with leaves and decided to make some pesto before they withered and were unusable. So, I thought...why not share how to do that with all of you? :)

So...here's a yummy, healthy and easy way to use up some basil! :)

First, pick about five cups of leaves

Clean out the bad spots and remove the stems.

Clean your basil and dry it

Next, put about half a cup of nuts (I used almonds, but walnuts would be even better) into the bottom of a food processor and pulse a couple times.

Add your basil (It will be less than five cups when you put it in because you will need to pack it in.) and process for a few minutes

Add about half a cup of olive oil and one and a half cups of Parmesan cheese

Add about two or three tablespoons of minced garlic

And a few pinches of salt

Process until fully blended

And that's it!

Tips: Pesto tastes best when it's chilled.
Also, it's wonderful on toast and bagels

Pesto is often times a rather expensive item in the grocery store (especially if you're going to find it this healthy) so, now you can enjoy it at a low cost and know for sure that there's nothing unhealthy about it!

Enjoy!

Cinnamon Vanilla Latte and Why You Don't Need to Watch Horror Movies

So it's Saturday morning and it's kind of gloomy outside. It's also cold. I love to be cold. But I put away all my jeans for the summer. So cold in shorts is not nice. However, cold frappuccinos whilst cold in shorts is worse. So, instead of making a deliciously freezing chocolate drink, I decided to try out a latte.

I have never had a latte before. I always thought they were for non-coffee drinkers. However, they did look very delicious on Pinterest and such. And drinking hot milk sounded amazing whilst I was busy being cold in shorts.

So, I put some instant coffee granules in a mug, because you can't really drink milk without coffee. (Actually, you can, I'm just stubborn.) [And I've never used instant coffee granules and wanted to try them out.]
And then I had to decide what to flavor it. Peppermint mocha latte? Nah. Cinnamon? Ooh, cinnamon on a rainy, cloudy day. And vanilla. That's kind of mandatory. Some sweetener, and of course, milk. Nuke it.

Froth it.
KABOOM.
A deliciously warm cinnamon vanilla latte. Mmmm....

And now I can drink my deliciously warm cinnamon vanilla latte whilst being cold in shorts because I won't shut my window because I really do enjoy being cold and then I'll tell you that you really don't need to watch horror movies. Continue Reading...

If you are a Trim Healthy Mama (or in my case, Trim Healthy Teen) this recipe is a Fuel Pull.

Cheers!

Cinnamon Vanilla Latte

Half a teaspoon or less of instant coffee granules
2 small pinches of cinnamon
5-10 drops cinnamon extract
Dash vanilla
A squirt of Stevita drops to taste (my choice of sweetener, but you can use Truvia, Stevia, etc.)
Milk of choice (I used almond)

Put everything into a mug and stir well. Heat it up in the microwave for about a minute- maybe more depending on how hot you like it. Stir it again to make sure those coffee granules have dissolved. Froth it if you like! Enjoy!

Homemade Coconut Peppermint Sugar Scrub

Hello everyone!
My mom and dad have been on a Trim Healthy Mama plan, which eliminates sugar from your daily diet, and so we've got all this sugar just laying around. Well, okay, not lots, but enough to make a sugar scrub with!
I saw this idea on Facebook as a use for now unused and tempting sugar. So, with (sadly) no measuring, mom and I made our own.

I think our ratio was about 3/4 sugar to 1/4 coconut oil. The coconut oil was slightly melty, so I did end up adding more sugar in the end. Then we just kept adding peppermint oil until it smelled oh so good!
I really like using it as a face scrub in the shower! It leaves your skin feeling so smooth and clean. The peppermint leaves you feeling refreshed, and the sugar coconut combo cleans out all those little pores. It's really lovely.

Do you have any extra sugar lying around? Give a sugar scrub a try!

How Short is Too Short?

As spring fell away and summer finally came - a fashion of years past revealed its head once again: shorts.

Lengths ranging from below the knee to denim underwear, girls have been sporting long, tan legs nearly everywhere.
As followers of Jesus, we have to choose to dress modestly so that we don't cause a major stumbling block to the men and boys around us.
And that poses a question that may baffle some of us.

How short is too short?

There is one loose rule that says to let your arms hang loose at your sides and stretch out your fingertips. Your shorts may be no shorter than this length. As mentioned before, this rule is loose, too loose, in fact, to be counted valid. Someone could have very short or long arms, long or short legs, and even average lengths of both limbs still leaves you with short shorts.

So here's my take on a shorts rule. Let's not start up and work our way down, let's start at the knee and work our way up. Take a ruler and measure two inches above the kneecap. That's the best length for your shorts.
Find your kneecap by placing a ruler along your calf. Line it up with the bent portion underneath your knee- a dark looking triangle.

From that point,(just on top of your leg) measure out your two inches. This is a good base measurement for your shorts. Try not to go shorter than this length.
Wearing short shorts is a direct invitation for people to look at your legs. This is a stumbling block for guys. As Christians, we need to be aware of this and take the utmost precautions to avoid those blocks as much as possible.

"For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness." 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 (NKJV)

Have a great rest of the summer!
